The Windsor centre for
Film, Digital Media & the Creative Arts is hosting a workshop for those who
have been wanting to get published but did not know where to start, and also
for those looking to hear about the business of getting published from an
agent’s perspective. The workshop, titled How
to Get Published: An Editor and An Agent Tell All, will take place at the
Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator, 720 Ouellete, on Sunday, May 31st,
11 am until 5 pm.
The
workshop will be led by well-known author, instructor and editor, Brian Henry,
in collabor-ation with Martha Magor Webb, literary agent with big-name success
stories.
Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor
for more than 25 years. He publishes Quick Brown Fox, Canada’s most popular blog for writers, teaches
creative writing at Ryerson University and has led workshops everywhere from
Boston to Buffalo and from Sarnia to Charlottetown. But his proudest boast is
that he has helped many of his students get their first book published and
launch their careers as authors.
Guest
speaker, Martha Magor
Webb, is a literary
agent, director and full partner at Anne McDermid and Associates. The
McDermid agency represents literary novelists and commercial novelists of high
quality and writers of nonfiction in the areas of memoir, biography, history,
literary travel, popular science, investigative journalism and true crime. The
agency also represents a certain number of children's and young adult writers
as well as writers in the fields of science fiction and fantasy.
“If
you've ever dreamed of becoming a published author, this workshop is for you,” said Sohan Koonar, event sponsor and volunteer with
Raindance Windsor Detroit and the Windsor International Writers Conference.
“I have attended Brian Henry workshops and appreciate that he takes time to
answer questions. Local writers should attend and get ready to be
published! It is a great learning opportunity for new and published
authors.”
Henry
covers everything from getting started to getting an agent, from getting your
short pieces published to finding a book publisher, from writing a query letter
to writing what the publishers want. Participants are invited to
bring a draft of a query letter you might use to interest an agent or publisher
in your book. This is not required but those who chose to are advised to bring
three copies.
