Want To Get Published? Attend The May 31, 2015 Workshop At The Accelerator

The Windsor centre for Film, Digital Media & the Creative Arts is hosting a workshop for those who have been wanting to get published but did not know where to start, and also for those looking to hear about the business of getting published from an agent’s perspective.  The workshop, titled How to Get Published: An Editor and An Agent Tell All, will take place at the Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator, 720 Ouellete, on Sunday, May 31st, 11 am until 5 pm.

The workshop will be led by well-known author, instructor and editor, Brian Henry, in collabor-ation with Martha Magor Webb, literary agent with big-name success stories.

Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for more than 25 years. He publishes Quick Brown Fox, Canada’s most popular blog for writers, teaches creative writing at Ryerson University and has led workshops everywhere from Boston to Buffalo and from Sarnia to Charlottetown. But his proudest boast is that he has helped many of his students get their first book published and launch their careers as authors.

Guest speaker, Martha Magor Webb, is a literary agent, director and full partner at Anne McDermid and Associates. The McDermid agency represents literary novelists and commercial novelists of high quality and writers of nonfiction in the areas of memoir, biography, history, literary travel, popular science, investigative journalism and true crime. The agency also represents a certain number of children's and young adult writers as well as writers in the fields of science fiction and fantasy.

“If you've ever dreamed of becoming a published author, this workshop is for you,” said Sohan Koonar, event sponsor and volunteer with Raindance Windsor Detroit and the Windsor International Writers Conference.  “I have attended Brian Henry workshops and appreciate that he takes time to answer questions.  Local writers should attend and get ready to be published!  It is a great learning opportunity for new and published authors.”

Henry covers everything from getting started to getting an agent, from getting your short pieces published to finding a book publisher, from writing a query letter to writing what the publishers want.  Participants are invited to bring a draft of a query letter you might use to interest an agent or publisher in your book. This is not required but those who chose to are advised to bring three copies.

Sign up quickly as space is limited! Cost is only $56 per person. To register or for more information, email raindance@windsor-detroit.com.  Advance registration is required and can be found at: www.windsorfilmmaking.com/classes/

Kingsville Folk Music Festival & The Bank Theatre May 23, 2015 Concert

Kingsville Folk Festival & The Bank Theatre Present Annie & Rod Capps with Jason Dennie

Following a SOLD OUT first time joint fundraising effort, Kingsville Folk Music Festival & The Bank Theatre will present the second concert in a series, featuring multi-award winners Annie & Rod Capps with Jason Dennie at the beautifully renovated Bank Theatre and Meeting Place, Saturday, May 23.

On a musical journey that began in 1982, Annie and Rod Capps have earned sincere praise for their songwriting and musicianship, with two albums topping the Folk-DJ charts, multiple Detroit Music Award nominations, and as 2-time Kerrville New Folk Finalists.

They’ve been cultivating a symbiotic sound that reflects their deep and intuitive understanding of each other, delivering songs about broken things and poignant little ponderings with a rootsy vibe, a touch of twang and a soulful groove. Anne and Rod have recorded 1 EP and 6 full length CDs of original music, with a few notable exceptions. Their growing and devoted fan base is awaiting their highly anticipated, soon to be released CD, "Searching For Neverland." And, as ever, Gamble Rogers Fingerstyle Champion, multi Cammy Award winner, illustrious mandolin, guitarist and singer Jason Dennie will join them on stage. The Capps and Dennie have thrilled audiences in sold out concerts and return to the area as fan favourites from the inaugural Kingsville Folk Music Festival last August.

The Bank Theatre is located at 10 Erie Street South in Leamington. Doors open at 7 pm, show begins at 7:30 pm. Limited seating, patrons are urged to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are just $20 per person, and available at Rebel Cowboy Music, 5 Main St. E Kingsville 519-997-7777 or Counter Effects, 2 Iroquois Rd. Leamington 519-326-4014 and Fletcher’s Cleaners, 245 Erie St. S, Leamington.

The concert is a fund raising project of both the non-profit Sun Parlour Folk Music Society and the registered charity Sun Parlour Players Community Theatre. The Sun Parlour Folk Music Society exists to provide diverse high quality folk music through concerts and the annual Kingsville Folk Music Festival. SPFMS allocates funds to the MAY FUNd (Music and Arts for Youth) which provides financial assistance to regional youth to access the arts.

Sun Parlour Players Community Theatre is a vibrant organization where everyone can experience the performing arts. Sun Parlour Players Community Theatre is committed to bringing to the community a performing arts centre, The Bank Theatre, with the highest quality of planning, design, and functionality, to accommodate all age groups and all appropriate aspects of liberal arts.
