Cartidge World's 4th "Refill for a Cure"

November is National Diabetes Month—a time to shine a spotlight on a serious disease that leads to potentially life-threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation.

Starting November 1, 2013, the public can once again help support the Canadian Diabetes Association by making a donation or using the refill services at Cartridge World on 5124 Tecumseh Rd. E.  Customers can make a $1 donation and purchase a “Blue Circle” to be prominently displayed in the store and/or use the refill stores to have the profits donated back to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

In November 2013, The Windsor Cartridge World store supported the Canadian Diabetes Association for a month long promotion that offered the entire profits of their refill services from any new customer who mentioned the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“We are pleased to partner with the Canadian Diabetes Association for a fifth campaign,” says John Fraser, Owner, Cartridge World. “Cartridge World’s customers and staff have always responded generously to this worthy cause, and we appreciate whatever they can give to help support their community.”

“We feel that making a commitment to support the Canadian Diabetes Association is crucial.  Diabetes touches the lives of thousands in our own community and by offering this promotion we hope to not only raise funds to find a cure but also raise awareness of this disease” says Fraser.

Cartridge World operates in the fast-paced information technology environment. Advancements in information technology over the past decade have transformed business to be dependent on computers and printers. Consequently, refilling printer cartridges has become one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Cartridge World is now the world leader in inkjet and cartridge refilling and one of the world's fastest growing franchises. There are over 1600 franchised Cartridge World retail stores worldwide.

The Canadian Diabetes Association works in communities across the country to promote the health of Canadians and eliminate diabetes through our strong nationwide network of volunteers, employees, healthcare professionals, researchers, partners and supporters.  In the struggle against this global epidemic, our expertise is recognized around the world.  The Canadian Diabetes Association: setting the world standard.  To learn more, visit diabetes.ca or call 1-800-BANTING (226-8464).

Fire Prevention Week 2013: Oct 6 to 12, 2013

“Prevent Kitchen Fires and Get Cooking with Fire Safety!”

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 6-12 this year, and the theme for 2013 is “Prevent Kitchen Fires and Get Cooking with Fire Safety”

The best way to prevent kitchen fires is to never leave cooking unattended,” says Fire Chief Bruce Montone.  “Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries in the province.”

Important steps to prevent kitchen fires include:

  • Pay attention when cooking - especially if you are using oil or high temperatures. If you must leave for any reason, turn off the stove.
  • Wear tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves when using the stove. Loose, dangling clothing can easily catch fire.
  • Keep a proper fitting lid near the stove. If a pot catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove.
  • Never attempt to move a burning pot.
  • Keep a close eye on anyone in your household who is drinking and attempts to cook.

"Often when we're called to a fire that started in the kitchen, the residents tell us that they only left the kitchen for a few minutes," says Chief Montone. "Sadly, that's all it takes for a dangerous fire to start. Help keep our community safe by taking responsibility to prevent fires from starting in the first place."

Windsor Fire and Rescue will be holding a number of events throughout the week to raise public awareness about Fire Prevention Week and the importance of preventing kitchen fires.

Highlights of the week’s events include:

·         Fire truck appearances and educational material to be distributed at a selection of local stores on Tuesday and Wednesday.

·         Fire truck appearances and public safety talks at recreation facilities and schools throughout the week.

·         Educational booths, truck rides and activities for kids and the whole family at Devonshire Mall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

·         Truck rides and a fire safety booth at Tecumseh Mall on Friday and Saturday.

Follow Windsor Fire and Rescue Services on Twitter @WindsorFire1 or visit www.windsorfire.com to learn more about Fire Prevention Week 2013 activities.

About Culture Days

Culture Days raises the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. With the support of volunteer groups at the national, provincial and local levels, hundreds of thousands of artists, cultural workers, organizations and groups, volunteers and supporters self-mobilize to host free participatory public activities that take place in hundreds of cities and towns throughout the country over the last weekend of September each year.

“Culture Days offers an incredible opportunity for Canadians across the country to not only explore but to participate in the cultural communities and activities that exist in their areas that they may have not even be aware of before.” - Udayan (Oakville, ON)

The fourth annual Culture Days weekend will take place September 27, 28 and 29, 2013, and will feature thousands of free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind-the-scenes,” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, designers and other creative people in their communities.

Polenta Gala August 31, 2013 For VON

Polenta Gala hosted by Fogolar Furlan to support local VON

The Fogolar Furlan Club is hosting a Polenta Gala on Saturday, August 31, 2013 to support The Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) Windsor-Essex. The gala will feature wine tasting sponsored by Pelee Island Winery and a white glove seven course dinner. The evening’s live entertainment will be by Big Louie & The Band. Tickets to the Polenta Gala are $70, with a partial tax receipt available from VON. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Fogolar Main Office at 519-966-2230.

Proceeds from this event will directly support the many programs and services offered by VON. The VON’s community support programs and services depend on fundraised dollars to operate.  Programs like Meals on Wheels, Home Help, Supportive Housing, and prenatal education would cease to exist without the generosity of the local community.

“VON supports the local community through programs and services that enable individuals to be in control of their health. We keep seniors safe and cared for in their homes; expectant parents educated and informed on the pending birth of their first born. We are so grateful to the Fogolar for recognizing the tremendous work we do in the community,” Jon Jewell, Manager of Business Development & Community Relations, VON Erie St. Clair.

The Fogolar Furlan Windsor was established in 1961 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2011. The culmination of our year-long celebration was Polentafest where we successfully set a new Guinness World Record™ for making the largest Polenta - 6150 lbs of it!

VON Canada is a national health organization and registered charity offering a wide range of community health care solutions that meet the needs of Canadians from coast to coast.  We are dedicated to being a leader in the delivery of innovative comprehensive health and social services and to influencing the development of health and social policy in Canada.

See "The Red Leather Jacket" Mystery July 13 or 20, 2013

"Theatre In The Barn" Presents:

"The Red Leather Jacket" Mystery

the latest installment in the popular "Red Detective" Series written by Joey Ouellette

"Detectives Hodgeson and Moore are on the case.   They're also getting on each others' cases!"

STARRING: Rob Tymec  and Nick Rogers

To be performed at:  River Canard Canoes, 9407 Malden Road (the barn in the back)

On: Saturdays, July 13th and 20th

Performance Time: 8PM

For Info call: 226 344 3814 or email: endor23@yahoo.com

"The Red Detective" series is a set of full-length plays involving detectives Moore and Hodge.   A somewhat-mismatched duo who make a living trying to solve homicide cases (that are, oftentimes, inspired by real life murder cases). Though each play is self-contained and can be understood without seeing earlier installments - the series also contains longer story arcs for fans who have been following along since the beginning.    The Red Leather Jacket is actually the very first story in the whole saga....

Although each Red Detective play has an interesting mystery to solve - there is another element to the play that makes it even more entertaining. The entire story is acted out by just two actors. Rob Tymec and Nick Rogers change in and out of  various costumes throughout the play to assume the identities of witnesses, suspects and investigators in order to tell the full story of the crime. As you enjoy the unravelling of the mystery - you can, at the same time, marvel at just how far these guys can take their multiple personality disorders!

Come see the Red Detective Tale that started it all!!
