Volunteers Needed For Gift Wrapping Booth

Each year for the past 22 years, Community Living Essex County has operated a Gift Wrapping Booth fund-raiser at Devonshire Mall in Windsor.  Community Living Essex County has been extremely fortunate to benefit from the generosity of hundreds of volunteers who, year after year, give of their time and holiday spirit to wrap gifts of all sizes for a small fee or donation.  Volunteers include students looking to secure community hours, local service clubs, church groups and small and large businesses that use the opportunity to give back or as a fun team building exercise.  Individual volunteers and groups are being recruited now.

The 2014 Gift Wrapping Booth is now official opened and will continue to operate during Devonshire Mall hours each day until Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) at 5 pm.  

The booth will again be located near Chapters Bookstore in Devonshire Mall on Howard Avenue in Windsor. So save time in wrapping your holiday presents and consider bringing them to the Community Living Essex County Gift Wrapping Booth at Devonshire Mall this Christmas.

Take A Photo of Your Meal When Downtown to Win a $100 Voucher in November 2014

Organized by the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association, the #30DaysDiningDowntown Windsor contest highlights participating restaurants and eateries and encourages patrons to take a picture of their meal for a chance to win a $100 voucher to any restaurant in the city centre. Contestants may enter the competition by posting a picture of their meal on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter; tagging or identifying the respective business; and using the hashtag #30DaysDiningDowntown Windsor.

The contest runs for 30 days during the period November 1 to 30, 2014. A.R.A. Annual Art Show & Sale October 17 to November 2, 2014

 The Association of Representational Artist (ARA) of Windsor & Essex is 

holding their annual art show and sale from October 17th, to November 2nd, 2014

The show and sale gallery is located at Windsor Crossings Outlet Mall 1555 Talbot Rd. Unit 110.

 The A.R.A. is a nonprofit group of painters that have focused on composing representational art work since 1978. The public is invited to see the show and help support the local artists. There will be 36 artist displaying and selling original compositions in water-colour, acrylic, oil and mixed-media. Side by side, the A.R.A. has established artists; evolving artist and undiscovered talents that sell their work directly to the public and make lasting connections with art patrons, dealers and collectors.

Hawk Fest 2014: Meet Wildlife Up Close

 If you are looking for new ways to discover nature and get outdoors, get to "Hawk Fest 2014" at Holiday Beach Conservation Area, Amherstburg, Ontario Sept 13/14 and 20 /22 from 9 am to 3 pm.

Each September, Holiday Beach becomes a migration hot spot as fall winds carry migrating hawks, songbirds, hummingbirds, dragonflies and butterflies across the skies and hawk tower.  Climb the tower to watch the amazing flight of hawks in migration and discover amazing facts about them from experts from the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (HBMO).  Have your picture taken with a banded hawk, and release it back up into the sky with HBMO’s Adopt-a-hawk program and watch them being banded and measured for migration research.  Let your adopted songbird fly out of your hand and learn more exciting facts from HBMO Songbird and Hummingbird Banders.  

Visit with a live Great-horned owl and Peregrine falcons at the Canadian Peregrine Falcon Foundation tent.  Shop at Pelee Wings Nature Store booth for binoculars, books and other nature items.  Buy or learn about native trees or flowers at the Native Tree and Wildflower’s booth, and visit the other nature themed booths as well.  Make a free nature craft, go on a scavenger hunt and see water insects up close and through the microscope in the Kids Zone.  On Saturday, September 13 from 10:30 am – 12 noon, visit with animals from around the world with Zoo to You!

Plan your day with a visit to www.erca.org for the schedule of nature talks and walks. Discover the art of digiscoping, and the Blue Sky Photography Workshop and a Dark Sky Night of Star Gazing.  Walk the trails with dragonfly, butterfly and amphibian experts. Find out how to attract birds, butterflies and pollinators to your yard with native trees and plants.  Explore the world of bird and hawk watching and identification.  All hikes and workshops are offered free of charge with your admission of just $10 per car. 

The best raptor viewing time is from 9 a.m. until noon when the hawks fly low. The Holiday Beach Conservation Area is located on County Road 50, on Lake Erie near Malden Centre approximately 15km southeast of historic Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, a half hour drive from Highway 401 and only 40 minutes from the Ambassador Bridge for those coming from Detroit.

 As the popularity of birding continues to grow, the Essex Region Conservation Authority is introducing two new events to complement their always popular HawkFest 2014.

 Holiday Beach is renowned for the hundreds of egrets come in to roost at Holiday Beach Conservation Area each fall.  On Saturday, September 13 at 5:30 pm, ERCA will also host an Egret Evening, where outdoors at Holiday Beach, guests can enjoy a locally sourced meal of Lake Erie Perch and chicken from Black Jack's Gastrovan and a glass of wine from Cooper's Hawk Vineyards.   Dr. Chip Weseloh, retired from the Canadian Wildlife Service, has conducted significant research on this amazing egret roost and will share his expertise with our guests atop the Hawk Town as the egrets come in to roost.  Advance tickets must be purchased for this event and are available at www.egretevening.eventbrite.ca.    Please note:  like with all wildlife viewing in natural settings, there can be no guarantee of these sightings. 

As well, on Thursday, September 18 at 6:30pm, the Essex Region Conservation Authority presents An Evening with Joel Greenberg, author of A Feathered River Across the Sky: The Passenger Pigeon's Flight to Extinction. This book has been called "a parable for our time" by Dr. David Suzuki. Mr. Greenberg has been a leader in Project Passenger Pigeon to commemorate the anniversary of the species' extinction. The Passenger Pigeon was unlike any other bird. It probably numbered in the billions, making it the most abundant bird in North America, and possibly the world.  In September, 1914 - exactly 100 years ago, the last of the species died, marking the extinction of this unique bird. 

The Essex Region Conservation Authority is proud to present this special evening as part of our HawkFest 2014.  A delicious selection of h'or doerves will be served, as well as a complimentary glass of wine for guests of age, and a cash wine bar. Mr. Greenberg's talk will highlight the life and legacy of the Passenger Pigeon, and relate it to modern day conservation efforts.  Mr. Greenberg's book will be available for purchase at the event. Donate A Bike by August 29, 2014

In an effort to promote a healthy and active life style The Sandwich Town Business Improvement Area is collecting gently used bicycles from August 15, 2014 through to August 29, 2014. The donated bicycles will be given to Brock Secondary Elementary School students during the Sandwich Town Festival on September 6 & September 7, 2014.

 

Bicycles can be dropped off at The Dominion House 3140 Sandwich Street during the hours of 11 am to 3 pm daily.

The BIA is also asking for bike helmet donations and these can also be dropped off the Dominion House.

"We want to be able to provide these students especially those who have never been introduced to this type of activity the opportunity to own a bicycle," says David Grimaldi the Executive Director of the Sandwich Towne BIA.

Saddle-up for Alpha-1 Cowboy Cookout Steak BBQ

 

Alpha-1 Canada, an organization that supports patients with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and located in Windsor is hosting a Cowboy Cookout Steak BBQ and dance fund raising event on Saturday August 16 at the Riverside Sportsman’s Club. The event has a western theme and is called “Saddle-up for Alpha-1 Cowboy Cookout Steak BBQ.”

Could your family’s’ Asthma or COPD be hereditary? Portions of the proceeds from Saddle Up will go towards helping organ transplant recipients and the A-1 Kids Program to support affected children, their parents and families deal with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.  Wear your cowboy gear and support men, women and children suffering from this often debilitating rare disease with no known cure and often resulting in liver or lung transplants. 

 

Live music for dancing under the stars will be provided by Big Louie and the Band.

Windsor To Host Comedy Fest July To September 2014

Windsor's premier comedy club is gearing up for what is sure to be an entertaining summer. Comedy Quarry at Rockhead Pub on Ottawa Street will be hosting the first 'Border City Comedy Fest,' beginning on July 11, 2014 across various venues in the Windsor-Essex region.

The event will host 54 of the greatest comedians across North America, including 8 of Windsor-Essex's finest. Previously narrowed down from over 500 applicants, these comedians will ­battle it out for a chance to win their share of the prize pool, worth $5000.

Sponsors and partners for the event include the Windsor Star News Café, A&A Associates, and The Walkerville Brewery.

The generosity of the community has not gone unnoticed. Joshua Haddon, the Founder of the Border City Comedy Fest and Managing Partner of Comedy Quarry at Rockhead Pub stated, "The support from local businesses to help bring this event to our great city has been amazing."

The event will take place over the course of eight weeks, culminating in the grand finale on September 20^th, 2014 at the Olde Walkerville Theatre on Wyandotte Street. 

 

This 800 seat theatre sets the stage for the perfect finale; both as a celebration of the incredible talent of the comedians who will take part in this event, and the long standing history of quality events held at the theatre. Since its establishment in 1920, the Olde Walkerville Theatre has been the host to many grand performances, and the Border City Comedy Fest will be the latest addition to this list.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Fools for Health Clown-Doctor Program; an award winning, independent charitable organization dedicated to using the arts to promote health and well-being in hospitals, long term care facilities, and seniors' residences.

The Clown Doctor program uses therapeutic methods such as music, humour, improvisational play, and reminiscence to increase the quality of life amongst patients.

Third Windsor Soup Set For July 9, 2014

Enactus Windsor and Pathway to Potential are pleased to announce the final four projects for the third Windsor SOUP. The next Windsor SOUP will be held on Wednesday July 9, 2014 at 7 pm (doors open at 6 p.m.) at the Walkerville Brewery (525 Argyle Road).

The selected four projects that will be pitching for the next Windsor SOUP include 'Logoed Bus Service' that can be used to attend public events including festivals and farmer’s market with the aim of collecting non-perishable food items, hygiene products and cash donations; an 'Executive/Leadership Coaching' to provide effective leadership skills to emerging leaders to support the people in need and make the community a better place; an 'iPhone app' that connects residents and visitors to community points of interest: walking paths, bike trails, restaurants, wineries, parks, outdoor art (sculpture gardens), parking lots, bus routes or stops; and 'Athlete Mentorship Program' to bring professional athletes into act as a mentor for young athletes.

The event follows a 4:4:4 format; 4 presenters, each speaking for 4 minutes, and each presenter answers 4 questions from attendees. With a donation of five dollars at the door, attendants will receive soup and salad donated by La Contessa and get a chance to vote on a creative project which they feel has the most remarkable potential to make a positive impact on the community. Meghan Chamberlain, local community artist and recent graduate of the University of Windsor’s Music program will be performing at the event.

Windsor SOUP is stepping ahead in an effort make social change in the community. The last Windsor SOUP on May 18, 2014 was a hit, bringing approximately 80 community members together. At the end of the event, Amy Pinsonneault received the majority of support from voters and won the micro-grant collected through the dinner. The collected donation was matched by P. & L. Odette Charitable Foundation, giving Amy a total of $780 for her project.

The mission of Windsor SOUP is to provide support for creative projects and enhance social activities in Windsor-Essex community. “It was great to see so many passionate people come together to contribute to the betterment of our community,” said Nick Jones, Enactus team member working on Windsor SOUP.

3rd Annual Kingsville Older Adults Expo, June 3, 2014

The Kingsville Older Adults Advisory Committee invites you to attend the Third Annual Older Adults Expo taking place Tuesday June 3 2014 at the Kingsville Recreation Complex located at 1741 Jasperson Lane. Admission is free of charge.

Pasta Dinner May 30, 2014 To Support Local Family

On Saturday May 10, 2014 a tragic accident on the 401 took the lives of two members of our community.  Alyssa Smulders, 13, and her Uncle Marc Lafontaine, 35, both of Windsor were killed when a truck crossed the open median near Chatham, ON.

In an effort to assist the family with funeral and living expenses during this trying time, several benefits, and a fund have been set up for those wishing to make donations.

The following events are being held:

A benefit dinner will be held at the Moose Lodge 777 Tecumseh Rd. W. on Friday May 30^th, 6PM
Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 of which to go to the family.

A benefit Poker tournament is being held at Lauzon Landing 1545 Lauzon Rd, on Saturday May 31^st, at 1pm.  The tournament will have a buy-in of $50, with half the prize pool going to the family.  There will be additional door prizes, and a portion of all food and beverage sales are going to the family.

Through his work at CJAM, with Learning and FAM Festival, over the past 12 years Murad has developed a deep knowledge of the inner workings of the independent music industry and steps that can be taken to increase potential for success. Murad has chaired the Music Caucus at the National Campus-Community Radio Conference and spoke about DIY sensibilities and know-how on a panel at College Music Journal Conference in New York City.

Gift of Sport Walk-A-Thon May 19, 2014

Spring into Action this season with KidSport Windsor and provide the Gift of Sport to local area under-resourced children by participating in the first annual Gift of Sport Walk-A-Thon.

This event will be held on Victoria Day (Monday, May 19, 2014) at the Riverfront Festival Place from 11 a.m. -to 2 p.m.

Family, Friends and Caring Individuals will band together to raise funds to ensure that all kids have the opportunity to play organized sports!

 

Event Details

 

Walkers will meet at Assumption Park and warm-up with In Motion at 10:15 a.m. The walk will then begin at 10:30 a.m. en route to Riverfront Festival Place. FREE parking will be available on-site.

 

Live Entertainment, Food and Children’s Activities will be in abundance and FREE to the public!!!

 

100% of all funds raised will help children play organized sports.

 

We hope to see you on this special occasion, which will be celebrated with the City of Windsor’s 122^nd birthday during the Mayor’s Walk!

Leamington Arts Centre WSO concert May 3, 2014

The Leamington Arts Centre Presents the Windsor Symphony Orchestra Concert
